Your Appliance is a Fire Risk

A survey conducted by Which, and reported by the Daily Mail, has revealed that nearly 12,000 house fires were caused by faulty appliances, with washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers being the three main culprits. According to the survey results, 14% of appliance related house fires were caused by washing machines, 12% by tumble dryers and 11% were due to dishwashers.

In fact, according to the report, more washing machines and tumble dryers caught fire in homes throughout the UK than TVs, hair tongues and irons, with the cause of fires being attributed to the appliances have a fault which manufacturers were aware of, appliances being incorrectly installed or due to the appliances being improperly maintained.

The cost of appliances can be frightening, with the price of a washing machine varying from anywhere between £150 and £2,000. After spending a small fortune on household appliances it can be frustrating when they gain a fault.

However, at eSpares we don’t believe that a faulty appliance needs to prove costly. Nor do we think a fault should result in a new appliance being purchased; especially when there’s a good chance you’ll be able to carry out a repair for a fraction of the cost.

Last month, September, was the month when in reality not a lot happens, schools return and the countdown for Christmas begins. With many of us looking to tighten the belts after the summer holiday and ahead of the festive period, more time is being spent within the home resulting in the “to-do” lists of work which needs to be carried around the home increasing, with tasks such as fixing faulty household appliances making up a large proportion of the list.

Putting off such tasks may be the preferred choice for many of us, but following on from September being the official “self-improvement” month, we think that now is the perfect time to learn how to fix those broken household appliances yourself, improving your DIY skills and knowledge, at the same time as reducing your “to-do” list and saving money; that’s what we call a win-win-win situation.

No More Food Wasted

In the UK we throw away about 15 million tonnes of food. Almost 50% of this wastage comes from our homes. Obviously a good way to prevent this is to only buy what you need, when you need it but it’s also a good idea to make sure your fridge is in good working order to prevent food from going off and to keep it fresher, longer.

Don’t ‘Standby’

Did you know leaving your appliances on ‘standby’ can actually cost you up to an extra £86/ year? A recent survey advised that appliances left on ‘standby’ mode account for 9-16% of the average user’s household electricity bill. The worst offenders are televisions, satellite boxes and other audio/video equipment, but devices such as mobile phones, computers and even washing machines and dishwashers are increasingly being left in ‘standby’ mode.

We get a lot of great feedback from our customers about our products and service. There are certain comments that really make me chuckle, ones that go along the lines of, ‘Well it’s a light bulb. Took it out of the pack and put it in- not a lot to get excited about here.’ Or ‘It’s a grill pan. What do you want me to say about a grill pan?’ OK so not all spare parts are particularly exciting, but on the flipside we do also receive tons of comments where people describe their satisfaction and pride in being able to fix their appliances themselves. Things like ‘I never knew how easy it was, can’t wait for something else to break’ or ‘I almost hope something else breaks so I can fix it myself.’

An Idiot’s Fridge

It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s grey. Got that Monday feeling? I have the perfect tonic. It’s a few years old now, but it’s a beaut. Karl Pilkington, of An Idiot Abroad and Ricky Gervais podcast fame, has a voice which seems to ooze Monday morning. In this video the subject of his ire is the fridge repair man. Alas, if only Karl had got on to his computer and done a quick Google search, we might’ve been able to help. It wasn’t to be, but at least we got this video.
