House plants are a great addition to homes. Not only do they add a bit of character and comfort but are essential in helping to cleanse the air in your home. Also with the cool months here and our spending more time indoors, it will do you a world of good to expose yourself to some extra greenery. They won’t expect much in terms of care and maintenance and will never talk back. A match made in heaven.

We are indeed starting to say goodbye to summer. To be fair after its poor performance I am more than happy to help it on its way out. I think it needs to take a long hard look at its 2012 season and ask itself ‘did I really give the great British people a summer they could be happy with?’
Whilst we wait, with bated breath for the cooler months to arrive there are some simple things you can be doing to get your home and garden winter ready.

Ok, no matter if you are an urban dweller with limited outdoor space or you live in a more rural area with loads of space, there are some really cool and relatively easy things you can do to completely change and improve your garden. If it ever decides to stop raining and you get the time to do some garden maintenance, follow these steps where possible and hop to it!

The warm, sunny weather is here and there shall be no excuses for not getting your garden up to scratch this weekend. Sort your lawn, flowers beds, drains, gutters, do a spot of painting, clean the deck, pressure wash the drive, your patio, your children- whatever it may be get your home looking fab. A little DIY does the body good. Sort your chores then fire up the barbie, meet your mates, hit your local, whatever your little heart desires!

The typically British weather we’ve been having the last couple of weeks has left the grass in my back garden well in need of a trim. Over the last fortnight we’ve seen plenty of sun and a load of rain – perfect conditions for a lawn growth spurt.
One of the most common areas to break in Flymo electric mowers is the on-off switch and handle section – especially if during periods of heavy use. It can be really frustrating, as you know the mower is working fine, it’s just one of the more superficial parts that’s preventing you using it. Good thing the switch box is a doddle to replace!

Did you know that not only lawnmower engine oil is different to car motor oil? Or that it comes in different viscosity levels? If not, you do now.

Last week, I got a bit envious of Matt and Gabe, as they got to geek out over spark plugs, carburettors and the like whilst shooting a video for the Qualcast Classic Petrol 35s mower. In it Matt shows you what to do if your mower isn’t starting. Check out the roar of that four-stroke engine at 4:51. Beautiful.

Love the lawnmower in this video. I’ve had a go on it, it has a throttle and propels itself, you pretty much just guide it. Great for medium sized gardens. The thing may look pretty gnarly (the cassette blade looks like it’d make a bit of a mess of your extremities), but simply put together and easily maintained. C
heck out this video, in which Helen replaces probably the most common lawnmower part to fail in the mower – the nylon gear. Not a problem if it does fail though, because they’re dirt cheap and easy to repair:

I really like this product. It’s called the Drapers Tools Garden Kneeler and Seat.
Drapers Tools Garden Kneeler and Seat
If you have even the most fleeting experience with gardening, you’ll know there’s one main occupational hazard: back pain. Even if you’re no grandad, a few hours with the trowel down on hands and knees can mean you really suffer for the next day or so. It’s not very nice.
And that’s where this bad boy comes in:

Rather than crouching on the cold, hard sometimes even damp ground, you can now kneel or sit on a Draper Tools Garden Kneeler and Seat. I’ve tried one out and it really is a real help – you can weed and plant and aerate to your hearts content. Kneeling is particularly useful for pruning, while sitting works a treat for soil-work.
It’s a great versatile tool, and even has a storage space for your garden utensils, look:

I heartily recommend this product to anyone who, like me, has suffered the anguish of waking up the morning after a good gardening session, only to feel like a group of large men are having a tug-of-war with your spinal column. Especially with this sunny looking long weekend coming up.
