Spares in the spotlight! Behind the scenes with Amy

Meet Amy, our Social Media Assistant, budding photographer and spare parts enthusiast!
Yes, that’s right. Amy loves a spare part. So much so, she spent a day in our photography studio using them as her models. And after seeing the results, we just had to share them.
Here she talks photography skills, fixing appliances and why spare parts are actually pretty cool!
What is it that interests you so much about spare parts?
I know I sound like the weirdest person ever! So it all started when I went to go and help out in our warehouse. I was packing orders and I found that I was really interested in all the different parts we have. I think I was just expecting nuts and bolts and that kind of thing but there were all these different objects in different shapes and I just thought they looked really cool!
What inspired you to do a photoshoot using them?
I’m really into photography and I like making things look like something they are not. With spare parts, no one really knows what they are so it’s easy to make it look like something different. I just kept thinking of all the cool things I could make out of spare parts!
They just look so different from anything else that I have photographed before. It’s easy to go for a walk and take photos of trees or scenery and make it look interesting. Spare parts are more of a challenge and are so different from anything else I have photos of.
Did you use any special techniques?
It was basically just a case of messing around with different angles and lighting! I like playing around with light so I’m always trying to capture it in a different way. I didn’t want to do the same set up for each part so I had to keep thinking of some new and inventive ways to do it. For some, I just used the torch on my phone so I’m going to say you don’t need special skills, just play around and see what comes out!

Your mission as our newest social media recruit is to get more younger people, like yourself, into spare parts and fixing. How are you planning to do this?
So many people are environmentally conscious now, especially the younger generation and they don’t have a lot of spare cash when it comes to unexpected payouts such as your appliance breaking down. The reasons to fix are already there we just need to make them aware that it is an option. If more people knew about it, I don’t think they would fork out for new things, they would attempt to fix it themselves.
I think social media is the perfect way to get young people into fixing. Visual is the way forward and with these photos, I’m hoping to grab some attention. If people are interested in what it is, it will hopefully spiral from there. So watch this space!
Finally, how much of a fixer are you?
So before I started with eSpares, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know you could order spare parts to fix your appliances. So if something broke, I’d just think you have to get a new one. Now though, the next time an appliance breaks in my house, I’ll know exactly what to do. That’s why I want to get more younger people into fixing so they can do it too.
I have always been the handywoman of the house growing up though. So if there was a flat pack to do or if little things had broken, I’d be the one to do it! So I have definitely always had it in me!
