Extreme Appliances

Yesterday daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner was meant to attempt the highest skydive in history from 120,000 ft, breaking the sound barrier. As he fell scientists would be monitoring the effects on his body in the hopes to develop life-saving technology that could be used by high-altitude pilots, astronauts and space tourists.

Felix added, ‘Proving that a human can break the speed of sound in the stratosphere and return to Earth would be a step towards creating near-space bailout procedures that don’t currently exist’ Go on then Felix. Unfortunately weather conditions were less than ideal and after waiting in his pod all day, Felix had to bottle it.

Whilst I patiently waited for the incredible jump, I found myself discovering that sports of the extreme nature are not necessarily specific to humans. Recently, some appliances have been trying their hand at daredevil stunts and making disbelievers of us all. I’d be lying if I said I never presumed a washing machine could only ever clean your clothes and a fridge could only ever be, well just that, a fridge. I’ve learnt a valuable lesson and to be honest, feel somewhat ashamed that I had been so quick to judge……until you’ve walked a mile in another man’s shoes……….

Zack, a mini fridge at Sheffield University was been so inspired by Felix’s daredevil skydive he decided he wanted to try a ‘jump’ of his own. ‘I’m sick of people thinking I’m only here to keep peoples food cool. What about what I really want? I think this is a massive step for mini fridges everywhere and I feel pretty lucky to have this opportunity’

When asked about what he plans to do next Zack said ‘I’m not totally against trying some more extreme sports in the future but I think for now I’ll stick to keeping the boys’ food cool down the dorm’

Donny, a front loader from Doncaster has always wanted to know what it would feel like to get something inside him other than clothes. ‘I mean the first few loads you do is nice ‘n that but after a while it just gets boring. I’m pretty powerful and I’d love to properly test my strength.’ When we asked Donny what he thought he should be up against he exclaimed ‘Get me some builders kit!’ After not a lot of consideration, Donny decided a brick would offer the ultimate challenge.

We were able to visit Donny in A&E where he was in good spirits and had this to say ‘Hey, once I’m outta here and healthy, I’ll come back stronger, fitter and faster- I might be down now but I ain’t out’
