Holidays are for exploring unfamiliar places, relaxing with sand between your toes and eating excessive amounts of food! But if you’ve not packed the right travel essentials, you may find yourself broken down with a flat phone battery, train-bound with no music for company or tossing the contents of your suitcase, underwear and all, onto the airport floor in an attempt to get your bags under the weight limit!
So, but before you zip up your case and start dreaming of your escape, peruse our checklist of essential accessories to add for a truly blissful holiday.
If you’re travelling abroad, a travel adapter plug is the ultimate essential! Without it, you’ll be faced with a dead phone, lifeless camera, cold hair straighteners – need we go on? Whilst you’ve hopefully already got a travel adaptor on your “to pack” list, don’t stop at one. Take two or three with you in case one is faulty or you want to charge or use multiple items of tech at the same time. If your phone or tablet has a USB charger there are also travel adaptors with USB charging connections too.
Speaking of batteries running low, you’re going to want to make sure you have a portable phone charger to hand. Whether you’re setting out for a long drive to the beach or want to make sure you’ve got your favourite tunes to get you through a long train journey, you’re going to need some extra charging help! Invest in a USB car charger to keep you topped up in case of an emergency or a portable power bank to keep your gadgets powered up for on the move.
The sky is the limit unless you’re flying with a budget airline in which case the limit for your luggage will be much more modest. You’ll probably check the weight of your luggage before leaving for the airport but if you don’t pack the luggage scales with you it’ll be guesswork on the way back. Don’t risk the embarrassing airport reshuffle – pop the scales in your suitcase so you can rest easy that your holiday souvenirs haven’t put your case over the weight limit.
Travel with ultimate comfort by using a inflatable travel pillow or neck cushion to ensure a good night (or days) kip! Don’t struggle with awkward sleeping positions or run the risk of a stiff neck for the duration of your trip and invest in some much needed comfort. Don’t forget to pop an eye mask in your bag too, it will help keep away any light and help you drift off to sleep and dream of your upcoming adventures!
Away with the wire untangling that takes up half your trip! Invest in a pair of wireless earphones instead. Connect them up to your phone, tablet, laptop or other electrical devices so you can listen to music, watch TV or even take calls and not have to worry about restrictions or positioning. You can even share the experience with a pal and not have to sit ear to ear the whole way, result!
There is nothing more terrifying than the fear that your luggage won’t turn up at the baggage carousel or worse, your undies will come out one by one! Keep this risk to a minimum by investing in a security padlock. Set the code of your choice, keep it safe so you remember it and you won’t have to wear the same outfit all week long!
Do you find there are never enough hangers in your villa, cottage or hotel room for your carefully selected holiday wardrobe? If you like to meticulously unpack and make yourself at home in your new surroundings you may find adding a couple of extra hangers to your case useful. Travel hangers take up less space so stock up! If you’re super organised you can even pack your clothes on the hangers so all you have to do when you get to your destination is to hang them straight up.
Foldable Garment Bag
If you’re heading off to a fancy wedding or an important business conference, there may be some clothes that need a little extra TLC while you travel. Save the time of ironing or hunting for a dry cleaners and pop them in a foldable garment bag instead. It will keep them well protected and looking sharp so all you need to do is hang it up when you get there!
A camera issue on holiday is an unquestionable tragedy. How else will you inspire jealousy amongst your nearest and dearest than with images of colourful local cuisine, glorious blue seas, and amazing scenic vistas? Photos are the lasting mementos of your travels so let nothing stand in the way of you and your lens. Ensure that there’s plenty of room on your memory card and pack a spare if necessary. A spare battery or a camera charger is also a holiday must if you’re the snap happy type.
Rechargeable Tyre Inflator
Yep, we really have thought of everything! Before a long drive be sure to take a trip to the garage and fill your tyres up with air. But, if for any reason you have forgotten or the unfortunate event of a puncture occurs while you’re already on your way, carry a portable tyre inflator with you. This, and a puncture repair kit, will help you to safely get to a garage or your destination without having to wait hours for the breakdown van to arrive.
Coffee Press Travel Mug
Last but certainly not least is one for the caffeine addicts out there! If you’re getting up at the crack of dawn for a flight (or maybe even rising before the sun) a coffee fix will most likely be required. Pop a travel mug in your hand luggage to get a caffeine boost while you travel and enjoy tea or coffee all holiday long! Did you know cocoa beans contain a little caffeine too? So chocolate is another delicious way to get an energy boost, not to mention a great excuse to indulge!
