Spring has finally sprung and as the weather starts to pick up, so will your lawn! Having your lawnmower ready for action will make all the difference when preparing for your first mow of the season.
No matter what lawnmower you have, here are some essential tasks you need to perform before you can use it. So dust off your mower and follow this list to begin your preparations for the BBQ season!
Before use, your lawnmower will need a thorough clean. We have some great advice for cleaning your lawnmower on our Advice Centre page. But here are some important tips to get you started:
- Always ensure your mower is switched off, unplugged and cooled down before cleaning
- Remove dried-on dirt and grass using a stiff brush
- Use a damp cloth to wipe down the mower but avoid the motor and switches
- Scrape underneath the mower, the blade and the surrounding area to remove any stuck-on grass cuttings
Check the Blades
Your lawnmower blade should be sharpened at least once a year. To do this remove the blade and sharpen with a metal file or a hardware store should be able to assist you. If the blades are very chipped in places from hitting rocks or debris, they will need to be replaced.
Replace the Oil
Some mowers will need to have their oil changed and topped up once a year. To do this, remove the oil drain plug from the bottom of the engine and drain the dirty oil into a container. When drained, replace the plug and refill with fresh oil to the amount recommended in your owner’s manual.
Turn your lawnmower upright and check the condition of the belts. If they appear loose or show signs of rot or cracking, they will need replacing.
If you think your mower has developed a fault, don’t wait around to fix it. The good news is, most faults can be easily fixed! Here are some common lawnmower faults and how to fix them.
Maintaining your lawnmower could make it last for many years to come and help you to achieve a great looking lawn. Follow these steps and your mower will be ready and waiting whenever you need it!
