You’re just going about your day minding your own business when suddenly, “Achoo!” Uh oh. Your allergies are flaring up again.
Dust mites, pollen, and pets can all cause blocked noses, sneezes, itchy eyes and all sorts of other horrible symptoms. Luckily, you can turn to the appliances around your home to help you to feel better.
Vacuum Cleaner
- Having a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaners is super important for allergy sufferers. HEPA filters trap dust and allergens once they’ve been sucked up so they won’t be released back into the air. When you’re buying a new vacuum, always check it has a HEPA filter in it and replace the filter when it gets older and less effective.
- Get those allergens out of your home as soon as possible! Change the vacuum bag regularly or if you have a bagless vac empty the vacuum bin after each cleaning session, ideally outside.
- Hoover your mattress to remove dust and use a mattress cover specifically designed to help with allergies for sweet symptom-free dreams.
- One area you may not think to vacuum is your curtains, but dust can build up on them so make sure to give them a once over.
- If it’s a pooch that’s the problem a dog grooming attachment for your vacuum lets you groom your pet and suck hair and dead skin cells directly into the vacuum at the same time.
- When you have a guest coming who suffers from allergies get your vacuuming done in advance. Vacuuming on the day will disturb the dust, potentially making your visitor feel worse.
Washing Machine
- Quick! Hay fever sufferers, remove your clothes as soon as you get home and pop them straight in the wash to stop the pollen particles you’ve brought in with you lingering in the air in your home.
- Wash soft toys and bed linens in a hot 60°C wash to keep them clean and allergen-free.
- Dry laundry loads outside whenever possible to prevent mould and damp as mould spores can be another cause of allergies.
Air filter
- A quality air filter can make a real difference to the air quality in your home. As per your vacuum look for a model with a HEPA filter. Word of warning though, the best air filters don’t come cheap so reviews are great for helping you decide what to go for.
Cooker Hood
- Don’t let a steamed-up kitchen turn into a mouldy kitchen! Run your cooker hood filter when cooking, especially when boiling water on your hob, to remove moisture and avoid mould spores.
- Your cooker hood will also have a filter that can stop it from working well if it gets clogged. Check your filter every couple of months and clean or change it (depending on your filter type) to keep it effective.
We hope with these tips you’ll be feeling better and symptom-free in your home. Allergies are horrible but at least we have our appliances to help reduce the causes!
