Kitchen of the Future

I’ve seen the future, and it’s malleable and amorphous. Electrolux, the Swedish proprietors of all things appliance, run a ‘Design Lab’ every year, with the brief “to specifically seek solutions that address how people prepare food, clean and do dishes both within the home and beyond”.

Last year’s Lab produced some pretty brilliant ideas, however I was taken with one called ‘Heart of the Home’. Basically, it turns the whole kitchen worktop surface in to a touch screen display that makes the iPad 2 look like yesterday’s news. According to the video, you’d place your ingredients on the surface, which will recognise what food it is and then suggests recipes for you. You then ‘draw’ your cooking area and pans, which actually raise or depress (see, I told you it’s malleable and amorphous). You can adjust the temperature of the pans too. Pretty far out, I’m sure you’ll agree.

If anything went wrong with it I’m not sure how easy it’d be to get spare parts, but I suppose that’s a minor quibble. Check out the video:
