Use Your Home Appliances More Wisely

Today’s new appliances are far more energy efficient than ever and use less electricity than older models. Whether you’ve purchased a new low energy appliance or have an older version, here are some helpful tips that everyone can follow to reduce energy and cut costs.
Dishwashers
- Only run your dishwasher when it’s full. The majority of the energy dishwashers use is just to heat the water. Since you can’t control the amount of water used in a cycle, always wait until it’s nice and full before using.
- Use the air dry option instead of the heat dry option. If your dishwasher doesn’t have this option, prop the door open after the final rinse cycle to help dry the dishes
- Using a limescale and detergent remover on your washer will stop deposits building up which helps prolong the life of your dishwasher. The build-up of limescale also means the heating element has to work harder thus increasing energy consumption.
Refrigerators
- Refrigerators require the most energy out of all your home appliances, so follow these tips to help make them more efficient.
- If possible keep your refrigerator out of direct sunlight and do not place it next to the cooker.
- Find cold storage spaces to store fresh foods without using any electricity.
- If you have an American style fridge decide whether you really need to use the water and ice dispensers on the door. If not turn them off.
Washers and Dryers
- Clothes washers are more efficient when operated with full loads- so fill ‘em up!
- Use cold wash options. These options are just as effective as warm washes. If you ‘re still sceptical try purchasing a special cold-wash detergent.
- Use environmentally friendly detergents and whiteners to help keep our rivers, lakes and oceans clean!
- Try not to use a dryer where possible (albeit in this climate that might prove difficult). If you’re purchasing a new dryer look for one that comes with ‘moisture sensors’ that will automatically detect when the clothes are dry and stop.
- Using a limescale and detergent remover on your washer will stop deposits building up which helps prolong the life of your washer. Like with dishwashers, build-up of limescale also means the heating element has to work harder thus increasing energy consumption.
