If your appliance goes wrong, first things first, check the manual
A blinking red light on your fridge could be nothing more serious than a power cut earlier in the day. The solution to your appliance woes could be as simple as turning it off and on again (yes, that old failsafe). Or you may have to replace a faulty part. There’s only one way to know for sure; check the manual.

Play close attention to the symptoms of the broken appliance
If you’re not sure what the matter is with your appliance, watch it like a hawk! You can then look up the symptoms of the fault online and decode any error messages you see.
Once you’ve got an idea of the area of your machine that may be faulty, you can diagnose it further with a multimeter.
Know your appliance make and model number for spare parts
Having your model number handy before you start your spare parts search will save you no end of faff. If you’re not sure of your model number here’s how to find it.
Make sure to have the right tools for the job
There’s nothing more frustrating than getting halfway through a job and then realising it’ll be delayed as you don’t have the right Torx screwdriver or pair of pliers. Check the tools you’ll need for the repair before you begin and you won’t have to stop and start.

Get a second pair of hands
Many hands make light work. If you need to move a heavy appliance or have a part supported whilst you screw it in, don’t try to be a lone wolf and complete the task single-handed. Get help where you need it.
Your hair standing on end following an electric shock isn’t a scenario that scores high on the stress-free scale. Unplug your appliance when you’re working on it, use protective gear as needs be and always point tools away from yourself in order to stay safe. You won’t be much use at mending your appliance if you keep having to patch yourself up!
Take a break!
As with any task, taking regular breaks keeps your stress levels low and helps you do a better job. Yes, that’s right, enjoying a regular cuppa is a good idea when DIYing and don’t let anyone tell you anything different! Take the time you need to recoup energy and motivation and you’ll find completing your fix easier in the long run.
Keeping pets and children away from your DIY area is both safer and leaves your full attention for the job at hand, so there’s less chance of you making mistakes. Having said that, a few minor mistakes are probably inevitable – see step 10.
Accept that mistakes will happen
Practice makes perfect so if you’re undertaking a repair on a broken appliance that you’ve never tried before, you might have to go back and correct some errors. Let’s face it we’re only human and even professional repairers get it wrong sometimes. But if things are continually going sour and you’re getting frustrated, take a breath, take a break and step away from that oh-so-tempting hammer.
Fix your broken appliances one step at a time and you should find your repairs run much more smoothly. Remember to share these ten steps with any appliance repairer you know who has the tendency to accompany their fixes with an angry clattering of tools and strings of expletives!
