5 Reasons You Should Be Drinking Coffee

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks in the world, with over 70 million cups being drunk each day in the UK alone. But it isn’t just for a quick pick-me-up which makes coffee a popular drink, it also offers a number of health benefits (but please remember to drink it responsibly).

Five of the key health benefits offered by coffee include:

Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes:

In 2002 a Dutch study revealed that those who drink at least 7 cups of coffee per day are half as likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes, with a number of studies since then going on to confirm the findings.

Whilst the 2002 study revealed at least 7 cups of coffee a day can half risk of Type 2 Diabetes, a 2009 study of 40,000 participants revealed those who consume 3 cups of coffee a day have a 40% less chance of being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Increased Mental Performance:

Low to moderate caffeine intake (less than 400mg per day) is said to improve alertness and mental performance.

Research has also suggested that drinking coffee can help to significantly lower the risk of suffering Alzheimer’s disease. According to the research, drinking between 3 and 5 cups of coffee a day can reduce your risk of developing dementia by as much as 20%.

If you’re looking to boost your memory, have a shot of espresso, as it has been suggested a single shot can “turbo-charge” your memory for 24 hours.

Reduced Cardiovascular Risk:

It was suggested earlier this year that American’s are spending more money on coffee than ever before, and research conducted by Brooklyn College has suggested drinking 4 cups of coffee a day reduces cardiovascular risk by 53%.

More recent research conducted in South Korea has revealed similar findings, suggesting those who drink between 3 and 5 cups of coffee a day could be reducing their heart attack risk, as they’re less likely to develop clogged arteries. Fight Depression With Coffee:

A study conducted in 2011 found that women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day are less likely to suffer from depression, whilst the study also suggested those who drink 4 cups a day can reduce the risk of depression by 20%.

Enhance Your Sporting Prowess:

We’re not saying you’ll be able to run 10,000 metres as fast as Mo Farah or jump as high (or as long) as Jessica Ennis-Hill, but drinking coffee is said to enhance your sporting prowess.

The reason coffee helps when it comes to sport is due to increasing the number of fatty acids in the bloodstream, allowing muscles to absorb and burn the fats for fuel.

In addition to helping enhance your sporting prowess, coffee can also help you fight the fat. In fact, it is one of very few natural substances which have been proven to aid fat burning, with several studies showing caffeine can boost the metabolic rate by 3 to 11%.
