11 University Essentials

During student nights out, whatever city you’re studying in, you’re guaranteed to hear Bryan Adams’ “Summer of 69” in which he states that “those were the best days” of his life – a phrase which many also use when talking about the university days.

In an attempt to help make sure that your time at university are some of the best days of your life, at eSpares, we’ve looked back on our time at university and compiled a list of some of the essentials you’ll need.

For… Your Studies:

The first year of university was all about Fresher’s week, getting use to living away from home and making new friends, with a handful of lectures thrown in for good measure. Now, however, as you reach your 2nd, 3rd or even 4th year (delete as appropriate) the serious studies begin and the partying takes a bit of a back seat.

One of the essential tools to aid you with your studying will be your laptop, which you’ll rely on when typing up your lecture notes to make them legible, right through to completing essays and more importantly (if you’re in your final year) your dissertation.

Due to the constant use your laptop will come under, it’s important to make sure that it is able to handle the strain and that whenever it is called upon, especially during those times when you’re burning the candle at both ends; it is working to its full potential.

To help keep your laptop working, at eSpares we have an extensive range of spare laptop batteries and AC adaptors for all brands of laptops, meaning that there’s no excuse for your laptop to ever run out of power.

Another essential tool for your studying is the USB drive.

If you’re aiming for that First Class Honours degree, you won’t be working on an essay from start to finish in one sitting, nor will you be able to complete your dissertation in a day (as a guide, I spent most, if not all, of my final year working on my dissertation), so it’s important that you have somewhere to back-up your work.

You may remember times from your earlier school years when after working on a piece of work for a length of time, the computer crashed and you lost everything. Now remember the frustration you felt, and imagine how much it’ll intensify if this happens to your dissertation – it’s not pretty is it!?!

For… Your Cooking:

During your first year, if you lived in halls there’s a good chance that your cooking appliances including small appliances were provided for you. As you move into a student house however, many landlords require the tenants to provide their own, so it is important to ensure that you are fully prepared before you get there.

Some of the essentials you need to ensure are packed include a kettle and a toaster – although it is a wise idea to split the cost of these with your housemates, after all you’re all likely to use them and no house really needs four kettles and toasters.

Other essentials you should pack include cookware items, such as chopping boards, frying pans, woks, saucepans, etc – and when it comes to these items, there’s nothing wrong with having a few lying around the house; especially as the chances are many pots and pans will live in the sink, untouched for a couple of days after being used.

Whatever small cooking appliances you are after, and whatever cookware items you think you’ll need – to help you create those gourmet delights of fish-finger sandwiches, pasta and stir-fry (which seem to be the staple diet of students), at eSpares we stock an extensive range of cooking equipment.

For… Nights Out:

As you progress through the years at university, just because you’re no longer in your first year it doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to hit the town and enjoy a night out or two each week. To help you remember those nights out and other memorable occasions during your uni life it’s important to have not only a fully working camera, but also enough memory to store all those cringe-worthy photos on.

As your guardian angels at eSpares we once again have you covered.

Not only do we stock a range of digital camera spare parts and accessories including batteries, USB camera cables, and chargers for all makes and models; but we also stock an extensive range of memory devices, from 4GB SDHC memory cards through to 64GB memory cards, we have all your photographic needs covered.

For… Your Room:

No matter how well you get on with your housemates, you’ll end up spending a lot of time in your room at university – mainly because you can guarantee this will be a place where you can concentrate on your essay without being encouraged to partake in a game of indoor cricket involving a frying-pan, squash ball and kitchen bin!

To help make your room a sanctuary, there are a few essentials the team at eSpares recommend you take with you, including a TV aerial / aerial booster, HDMI leads and SCART leads to enable you to enjoy watching your favourite series between essays.

Another essential we’d recommend for the room within your student house (from our previous experiences) is a fan.

We all have one of those friends who even when it is summer, claims they are cold – and if you have a housemate like this, chances are they will try to sneak the heating on. There will also be the housemate who puts the heating on to dry their clothes. To stop yourself from drowning in sweat, a fan in the room, we’d say, is a must.

With the university essentials packed, it’s now time to head off for another year of your university of choice, and to broaden your horizons. Go forth my little grasshopper, grab the university experience with both hands and be the best you can be!
